With the school summer holidays here, many parents and care-givers will be wondering how to keep their children active, entertained, and off screens – without breaking the bank. Luckily, Portsmouth has the perfect solution: six free adventure playgrounds run by Portsmouth City Council, designed to spark imagination, build confidence, and let kids be kids.

Here’s just a taste of what your kids can enjoy:

  • Zip lines and huge climbing structures to test their balance and bravery
  • Splash pools to cool off in the summer sun (at Portsea, Buckland, and Stamshaw)
  • Sand pits, arts and crafts, and dress-up corners for creative play
  • Gardening, cookery, and wood workshops to learn new skills
  • Events during the holidays with themed games and activities

It’s more than just play

These playgrounds aren’t just great places to burn off energy – they’re about building confidence, independence, and friendships. The spaces are staffed by qualified play workers who encourage children to make their own choices and take safe risks, helping them grow in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Plan your visit

Each playground has different opening times and facilities, so it’s worth checking ahead before you go. And if your child is excited about the splash pools, it’s a good idea to call the site first to make sure they’re open that day – staffing and water testing can affect availability.
