Explore the great outdoors
Portsmouth is blessed with beautiful outdoor spaces that are perfect for family outings. Southsea Seafront with stunning views over the Solent and a relaxing atmosphere. Families can enjoy a picnic, take a leisurely stroll, or even go for a bike ride along the seafront. Southsea Common, Milton Common, Hilsea Lines and Foxes Forest are other great spots for outdoor fun, with loads of green space for games and relaxation.
Visit free museums and historical sites
Portsmouth boasts several museums and historical sites that offer free entry. Here are a few
Fort Nelson – Overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, this restored Victorian fortress is packed with artillery from across the world. Something for everyone.
Southsea Castle – The castle is open as a historical attraction, free of charge, Tuesdays to Sundays between April and October each year. Visitors can explore the keep, enjoy panoramic views from the top of the Keep to the Isle of Wight and Solent, then enjoy a bite to eat in The Courtyard (open all year).
Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery, offering educational and entertaining exhibits for all ages. Here you can take a walk through Portsmouth’s heritage, discover the world of Sherlock Holmes, see fascinating works of art, trace the history of Portsmouth FC and a whole load more besides.
Cumberland House Natural History Museum just next to Canoe Lake where you can enjoy educational exhibits that are both fun and informative. You can take a walk through the A-Z of Natural History, get up close with a huge dinosaur, and visit the wonderful Butterfly House.
Free activities at your local library

Canoe Lake in Southsea is perfect for a family day out. Kids can enjoy pedaloes, feeding the swans, and playing in the nearby playground.
